Learn About Xarelto
Xarelto is a prescription anticoagulant, a type of medicine that inhibits clotting of the blood in order to treat atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and to prevent blood clotting in patients undergoing knee and hip replacement surgery. Abnormal blood clotting can have serious consequences if untreated, possibly leading to stroke or even death. By thinning the blood, Xarelto is intended to help patients avoid abnormal clotting in certain situations. Xarelto is licensed from Bayer HealthCare AG and is marketed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical company.
The Xarelto medication guide offers helpful insight regarding the potential side effects that may be linked to this anticoagulant. Xarelto may cause bleeding in some patients, and this may be serious or may even lead to death. As a blood thinner, Xarelto may increase the risk of bleeding in patients who take aspirin, warfarin sodium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or other drugs that prevent or treat blood clots. Patients are warned to seek medical help if they experience any of the following while taking Xarelto:
- Frequent nosebleeds;
- Bleeding from the gums;
- Vaginal bleeding;
- Heavier than normal menstrual bleeding;
- Severe, uncontrolled bleeding of any kind;
- Pain or swelling from wound sites;
- Red, pink or brown urine;
- Coughing up blood;
- Vomiting blood;
- Vomit that looks like coffee grounds;
- Feeling dizzy or weak; or
- Bright red or black, tar-like stools.
What side effects may be linked to Xarelto?
One of the most serious adverse events, or side effects, that may be linked to Xarelto is hemorrhage. According to Adverse Events, a company that organizes and compiles information from the FDA Adverse Events Reporting System (FAERS), there were 281 reports of gastrointestinal hemorrhage and hemorrhage where Xarelto was listed as a suspect drug for causing these adverse events. There were 146 reports of gastrointestinal hemorrhage and 135 reports of hemorrhage where Xarelto was listed as a suspect drug, and 107 of each that listed Xarelto as the primary suspect drug.
A total of 1,821 reports have been filed in FAERS with Xarelto considered a "primary suspect," as of August 27, 2012. The outcomes of these events have included hospitalization, disability and death. As pharmaceutical litigation lawyers, we have the goal of seeking justice on behalf of those who have been harmed by Xarelto and to prevent similar injuries from occurring to others.
Involving a Xarelto Attorney
It is important to consider hiring an attorney if you or a loved one has suffered side effects from Xarelto or any prescription or over-the-counter medication. The manufacturers of these drugs may be held liable for injuries or wrongful deaths caused by their medications. To seek justice, however, you will need to be able to build a compelling case against the pharmaceutical company. This requires resources, experience and manpower. As a large firm, NBRS has all of these in spades. We also take care to provide the personal attention often only delivered by small firms and solo practitioners.
The combination of an individualized approach and considerable resources makes NBRS a worthy opponent for even the largest drug companies. We are not afraid to litigate against multinational corporations with teams of attorneys dedicated to countering drug injury lawsuits. Instead of putting your future at risk or letting a pharmaceutical company get away with producing a dangerous drug, take legal action with an attorney at our firm.
